Here’s what I wrote yesterday for the Tribune-Star and the Post-Tribune. I also wrote a capsule on Cody Zeller for the Tribune-Star’s sister paper, the Washington Times-Herald, but it hasn’t been posted online … yet.
Obviously, the big news overshadowing the Hoosiers’ first Big Ten Tournament win since 2006 was the injury to senior guard Verdell Jones III. IU announced this morning that Jones had torn the ACL in his right knee. His season is done.
Jones has taken a lot of criticism for his play over the years from IU fans, but he stuck it out and willingly, it seems, took on a reduced role for the Hoosiers this season, pushed out of the starting lineup by his younger teammates.
At the same time, Indiana is going to have a tougher time this postseason without Jones. Remy Abell and Daniel Moore are going to have to play more minutes, and Victor Oladipo will play more point guard with Jones done.
The Hoosiers’ first test minus Jones comes today against Wisconsin.
