Nobody cares about your fantasy football team

But today’s other blogging option is writing about resolutions, and Lord knows I’ve done that too many times.

The playoffs were about to begin in the fantasy football league I’m in, and I had some decisions to make.

C.J. Stroud was out with an injury, as was his top target Nico Collins. They were two of my big scorers and had helped me to a fifth-place regular-season finish in the league. I was also not going to have Tyreek Hill or Isiah Pacheco to get me some points.

But I certainly wasn’t worried about my defense. I had picked up the L.A. Chargers a few weeks before, dropping Philadelphia’s defense in the process. And for the first round of the fantasy football playoffs, the Chargers would be facing a Las Vegas team coming off a 3-0 loss to Minnesota.

You likely know the rest. The Raiders went from not scoring a point on Sunday to scoring a franchise-record 63 points on Thursday. I was already in negative points and was sure this would be the end of the road for my team.

But Jahmyr Gibbs (29 points), David Njoku (26) and Noah Brown (22) helped me score a first-round victory and move on to the championship semifinals. Surely, though, this would be the week that my playoff run came to an end.

Not quite. I had picked up Joe Flacco, and his connection with Njoku (49 combined points from those two), plus another big game from Gibbs, his backfield mate David Montgomery and others got me the victory and a spot in our fantasy football league championship game.

I went back and forth on who to start, especially at QB. Flacco had been playing well, but would it continue against a fairly good New York Jets defense? Stroud was coming back for a must-win game against Tennessee.

I chose Stroud, then watched with concern as Flacco torched the Jets on Thursday night. Then Gibbs and Montgomery combined for just 17 points against Dallas on Saturday night, and I was convinced that I would be settling for second place.

Enter Harrison Butker.

The Kansas City kicker booted six field goals, including three from beyond 40 yards and a fourth from 54. His 46-yarder with 2:59 to play broke the tie in our fantasy league championship game and gave me the victory.

So, a nice way to close out 2023. Now I wait and see what the Colts do in this Saturday’s de facto playoff game against the Texans.
