We still do

I’m not particularly devout, so when I’ve used the word “blessed” in relation to the events of my life over the years, I’ve done so with a bit of smart-aleck behind it. “About to eat these tacos. #blessed” for instance.

But when my wife and I renewed our vows — in part to celebrate our 25th anniversary and in part to celebrate her being cancer-free — I truly did feel blessed.

Part of that blessing was the weather, or lack thereof. The night before, the remnants of Hurricane Helene — which of course did much greater damage elsewhere — came roaring through and left its mark on our back yard, where we were planning to celebrate our recommitment to one another.

But we pushed on; one might even say we “weathered the storm,” as it were, and no, I won’t apologize for the pun. With the help of family and friends, we got tents set up, chairs moved around and the ceremony was on.

And it’s those family and friends whose presence truly made me feel blessed. That they took the time out of a busy Saturday to spend time with us as we celebrated our love for each other showed me just how much my wife and I are truly loved. You know it, of course, but it’s heartwarming to see it displayed in the presence of so many of our loved ones.

Of course, it may also have been the BBQ food truck that drew them here…
